Frequently Asked Questions about PERC Classes

A Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC) is a state-issued credential required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) for anyone working as a private security officer in Illinois. Without a valid PERC card you cannot legally work as a security officer in the state. Our 20-hour Basic Security Training course meets all IDFPR requirements and prepares you to obtain your card and begin your career.

No prior experience is required. This course is specifically designed for individuals who are new to the security industry and want to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. All you need to bring is a valid Driver’s License or State ID, something to write with, and a commitment to learning.

This course covers the requirements for unarmed private security officers in Illinois. If your goal is to work as an armed security officer, additional training and licensing will be required beyond this course. The curriculum covers all state-required subject areas including Illinois criminal law, use of force, arrest and control techniques, civil rights, first aid, fire safety, report writing, active shooter response, ethics, and the identification of terrorism and terrorist organizations. Every topic is taught by experienced instructors with real-world backgrounds in law enforcement and security operations.

Upon successful completion of the 20-hour training you will receive documentation needed to support your PERC card application through the IDFPR. Frequently Asked Questions for FCC Classes

No. A valid FOID card is not required to enroll in or complete the 28-hour Armed Security Training course. However, you will need to meet all applicable state requirements when applying for your Firearm Control Card through the IDFPR following course completion. We strongly recommend completing the 20-hour Basic Security Training and obtaining your PERC card before enrolling in armed security training, as most employers require both credentials. No problem. Firearms are available to rent and ammunition can be purchased directly at the range. You will need to bring a rigid belt and holster regardless of whether you use your own firearm or a rental. Contact us in advance if you have questions about available rental options.

The live fire qualification requires students to demonstrate safe and accurate firearm handling on the range under instructor supervision. Your instructors will prepare you thoroughly before qualification day so you arrive at the range confident and ready to perform.
