FCC

Armed Security Training

Our state-required 28-hour Armed Security Officer Training program meets all IDFPR standards and prepares you to obtain your Illinois Firearm Control Card and begin working as a licensed armed security officer. This course combines classroom instruction with live fire range qualification and covers everything from Illinois and federal firearm laws to situational awareness, use of force, and weapon retention.

WHAT to Expect

Whether you are enrolling in the PERC or FCC program our Southern Illinois classes follow the same proven format:

  • Structured Classroom Instruction — Your training begins with comprehensive classroom sessions covering all state-required subject areas. Our instructors bring real-world experience into every lesson making the material engaging, relevant, and immediately applicable to the job
  • Hands-On Practical Training — Certain modules including arrest and control techniques and firearm handling involve supervised practical exercises designed to build confidence and muscle memory in a safe, controlled environment
  • Live Fire Range Qualification (FCC students only) — Armed security training students will complete live fire qualification at the range under direct instructor supervision. Full details on range location and requirements will be provided upon enrollment
  • Written Examination (FCC students) — The 28-hour FCC program includes a state-required written exam covering key legal and operational concepts. Your instructors will ensure you are fully prepared before exam day
  • Small Class Sizes — We keep our Southern Illinois classes intentionally small to ensure every student receives the personal attention and direct instruction they need to succeed

WHAT You Need for Class

  • Valid Driver’s License or State ID — Required for enrollment verification and identity confirmation
  • FOID Card (if you have one) — Not required to take the course but please bring it if you have one
  • Pen or Pencil and a Notebook — For note-taking throughout classroom instruction sessions
  • Rigid Belt and Holster — Required for range training. Please ensure your holster is appropriate for your firearm before arriving
  • Your Firearm and Ammunition (if you own one) — Students are welcome to bring their own firearm. If you do not own a firearm contact us in advance to discuss available options
  • Comfortable Closed-Toe Shoes — Required for all range training activities
  • Water and Snacks (recommended) — Staying fueled and hydrated throughout the training day will help you stay focused and perform at your best

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Our Southern Illinois training programs follow the exact same IDFPR-compliant curriculum and are held to the same high standards as our Northern and Central Illinois locations. The only difference is the location — the quality of instruction and the certification you receive are identical regardless of where you train with HBT.

We strongly recommend completing the 20-hour PERC training and obtaining your unarmed security officer certification before enrolling in the 28-hour FCC armed security program, as most Illinois employers require both credentials. Yes. Both the Permanent Employee Registration Card and the Firearm Control Card are issued by the IDFPR and are valid statewide regardless of where you completed your training. A certification earned through our Southern Illinois program carries exactly the same weight and validity as one earned at any other location in Illinois.
